The plot of this novel seeks out the answers that make up the essence of our lives. Who are we, what do we aspire to, what are our values, what makes the authenticity of our being, the essence without which life can only be the enslavement of circumstances? It is in this kind of life situation that we meet the main character, Jelena, a young woman stuck in a world that is patriarchal to the core and rooted in tradition. With no companions, no understanding of the environment, ignorant of the world behind learning habits and firmly based prejudices, the heroine dares to revolt against life and the dictates of village.
The act of liberation is merely an overture for something that could most accurately be termed a spiritual journey, a self-realization that encompasses the whole person, body, mind and soul. She learns and seeks for a fulfilling life, going through psychological breakdowns, ups and downs, but at the same time struggling with all the cruelties life carries with it.
The novel "Dance of the Heart" has the qualities of a picnic and even an educational novel, considering the heroine's quest for her own essence, for an experience that will allow her to get to know herself and build her own principles. In a realistic manner, Nevena Rozga evokes the contrast between village and city, mentalistic characteristics and nature. The context from which her characters emerge is clear at first glance and is close to us, but also far and mystical. The author draws convincing characters, depicting the time we live in. The characters develop in direct dialogues that interrupt the thinking of the heroine, her inner world often acting as a playground confronted by opposing forces. Forces that are not foreign to us since we ourselves belong to the time of this novel.
The clear narration makes this reading exciting and uncertain. It reads in breath and closes with the question: Am I truly living, in accordance with what I really am?
